Fatal Volusia County crash leads to homicide charges
A driver has been arrested in connection with a deadly Interstate 4 crash in Volusia County that left three people dead and another injured, according to Florida Highway Patrol information reported by WFTV. While the crash happened near DeBary, the case carries countywide significance because I-4 is a major route for Volusia residents traveling west toward Orlando and beyond.
Investigators said a 23-year-old Ocala woman was driving a Dodge Durango when she changed lanes and struck a Ford Focus. That collision set off a chain reaction involving a motorcycle and a Honda Pilot. Authorities said the Focus then hit the motorcycle, struck a guardrail, re-entered the roadway and collided with the Pilot. The motorcyclist and two passengers in the Honda Pilot were pronounced dead at the scene.
One additional driver was taken to AdventHealth Fish Memorial Hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening. Troopers also said the Durango left the scene after the crash. The vehicle was later found unoccupied by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office with damage investigators believed matched the collision. The suspect was later detained on a warrant and booked into the Volusia County Jail.
The charges reported include three counts of vehicular homicide and fleeing the scene of a fatal crash. Those allegations underscore the seriousness of the case and the continuing legal process that follows major highway fatalities. As with any criminal case, the charges will be tested in court, but the arrest marks a significant development in a crash that caused multiple deaths on one of Central Florida’s busiest corridors.
For Edgewater readers, the practical takeaway is a reminder about the risks on regional highways that connect Southeast Volusia to the rest of the county and metro area. Even when a crash occurs outside Edgewater or New Smyrna Beach, major incidents on I-4 can affect travel patterns, emergency response resources and public safety awareness across Volusia County. Fatal crashes also often lead to backups, detours and renewed enforcement attention.
This is not a neighboring-town story, but it meets the broader county relevance standard because it involves a major transportation artery used by many local residents. Anyone planning countywide travel should continue checking traffic conditions before heading out, especially after serious incidents that can have lingering effects beyond the immediate crash scene.
