Edgewater Man Charged with Attempted Murder After Residential Burglary Turns Violent on Yelkca Terrace

EDGEWATER, Fla. — A 41-year-old man was arrested Sunday evening after authorities say a residential burglary attempt on East Yelkca Terrace in Edgewater escalated into a shooting that left one person hospitalized.

Officers with the Edgewater Police Department responded just after 6 p.m. to reports of a shooting in progress during a residential burglary. Upon arrival, officers located and arrested Christopher Ryan Merritt, 41.

Merritt now faces serious charges including attempted murder, aggravated battery, and resisting arrest without violence. The victim was transported to a local hospital and treated for injuries sustained during the incident.

Authorities said body-worn camera footage from the encounter was expected to be released Monday. The Volusia County Sheriff's Office, the New Smyrna Beach Police Department, and the State Attorney's Office for Florida's 7th Judicial Circuit all assisted in the investigation.

The Edgewater Police Department said the case remains under active investigation.
