EDGEWATER, Fla. — The City of Edgewater is undergoing a significant leadership shake-up, with a series of interim appointments reshaping the upper ranks of local government.

Effective this week, Police Chief Joseph Mahoney has been elevated to serve as interim city manager, replacing Jeffrey Thurman, who had been filling that role on an interim basis. Thurman has been reassigned to his original position as interim public works director.

With Mahoney stepping into city management duties, Police Captain Charles "Chas" Geiger — a born-and-raised Edgewater native — has been appointed interim police chief.

"Chief Joseph Mahoney has demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication throughout his 23 years of service with the Edgewater Police Department," city officials said in a statement. "His ability to lead with integrity, communicate effectively, and make thoughtful, informed decisions makes him well-suited to guide the city during this interim period."

Geiger, who has been with the department since 2011, was praised for his professionalism and community ties. "His commitment to public service and community engagement will continue to support the Police Department's mission," officials added.

The transition follows years of political turbulence within Edgewater's city government. Former City Manager Glenn Irby was fired by the city council in September 2024, after being hired in 2019 to replace a city manager who was ousted in 2018. Thurman stepped in following Irby's departure and held the interim role until this latest reorganization.

No timeline has been announced for a permanent city manager search.
