Seven bicyclists struck in DeLand crash as FHP investigates
Summary
A pickup truck struck seven bicyclists in DeLand, with four riders hospitalized, including three with serious injuries, according to FHP.

Serious Volusia County crash remains under investigation

A crash in DeLand that left seven bicyclists struck by a pickup truck is drawing attention across Volusia County, including in Edgewater, where cycling is common on local roads and trail connections. According to the Florida Highway Patrol report cited by ClickOrlando, the collision happened just before 7 a.m. near Voorhis and Wade avenues.

Troopers said a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado hit the group of cyclists. Four riders were taken to hospitals. Three were transported to Halifax Health Medical Center with serious injuries, while another was taken to HCA Lake Monroe Hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening. The driver, identified only as a 30-year-old DeLand man, was not injured and remained at the scene.

Why Edgewater readers may care

Although the crash happened outside South Volusia, it has practical relevance for Edgewater residents because many locals ride on road shoulders, neighborhood streets, and regional routes for recreation and commuting. A crash involving this many cyclists is a stark reminder of the risks riders face when sharing roads with faster-moving vehicles.

Neighbor accounts in the report described a chaotic aftermath. One resident said someone knocked on the family’s door seeking help, and another vehicle reportedly swerved while trying to avoid the crash scene and struck a parked car. The same neighbor said speeding has been a long-running concern on that stretch of road.

Road safety concerns extend countywide

In Edgewater, cyclists regularly use corridors that connect to nearby communities, and residents often travel to other parts of Volusia for group rides and weekend events. That makes countywide traffic safety stories especially relevant. Visibility, speed, shoulder width, and driver awareness are recurring concerns in many local transportation discussions.

The report did not identify the cyclists or provide a cause for the crash, and investigators have not yet announced whether charges or citations will follow. For now, the incident remains an active investigation by FHP.

What to watch next

Residents should expect more details once troopers complete their review of the scene, vehicle movement, and witness statements. Updates could include whether impairment, distraction, roadway design, or other factors played a role. Until then, the known facts point to a major injury crash with broad implications for cyclists and drivers alike.

Anyone heading out on local roads this week should use extra caution, especially during early morning hours when visibility can be limited and traffic speeds may be higher. We will update this story if FHP releases additional findings.
